This truly has to be one of the greatest places Ive visited. Another beauty of this is We drove about 3 hours each way, to and from Chaa Creek Resort and Caracol. It was a commitment, but totally worth it. We had a guide from Chaa Creek Edward and he was great. The roads are challenging go with a guide - do The place is fantastic.
We have visited lots of ruins but this place really caught our attention. All positive reviews here are spot on. If you want to drive yourself here are some tips. We visited this site from our hotel in San Ignacio too far to travel from Belize City as a day trip and endured close to a thee hour bumpy, dusty ride to get there.
It's a fantastic site with a very interesting history which we First time experiencing Mayan ruins of any sort, and when I got to Caracol, my jaw was on the floor.
The main temple is MASSIVE, and the way it's revealed to you through between the trees is as beautiful as any cinematographer can imagine. These ruins are at least two hours on a very bumpy rock road and therefore we had the place nearly to ourselves! We saw five other tourists! A magical way to step back in time The ruins, the tree of life, the termite mounds and We drove from Hopkins Bay - which was about 4 hours to get to.
We were told not to be late for the 9am military escort. But there was not escort. They said they haven't done that in about 4 weeks. So, I dunno why Caracol is a remarkable Mayan site with many buildings. A lot of artifacts are still in place and you can wander the site freely. The military escort has not been showing up but there was a military presence on the site.
